The Magic Faraway Tree
NEAL STREET PRODUCTIONS
In 2022 I had the privilege of joining Neal Street Productions in early development on The Magic Faraway Tree, collaborating closely with the director Ben Gregor to explore the magical worlds required in Enid Blyton’s nostalgic and familiar children’s story. An independently financed feature film, the creative team faced the challenges that come with generating fantastical worlds on a significantly lower budget than more commonly expected on studio produced films.
I was therefore very fortunate to work alongside a very talented group of crafts people, ever enthusiastic to engage with the creative process in a significantly short period. The limitations meant embracing experimentation, collaborating across disciplines and taking some big risks! I very much enjoyed working and creating alongside Cineco construction, Keygreens, Craig Narrowmore, the set dec team led by Alison Harvey, Art department and Props team.
I had previously worked with VFX supervisor Tim Ledbury in stop motion animation. Also faced with budgetary challenges alongside the ambitious production value, we worked closely in an attempt to preserve the important relationship of an in-camera and digital world.
Initially we had 5 brilliant Concept artists illustrating for a very short period, but for the large part I worked very closely with Adam Brockbank to visualise sets and locations, lands and special make props.
